fortunately, the number of new Ebola cases in West Africa is decreasing and it can be hoped that this outbreak will soon be over. As of May 24, 2015, the WHO reported 27049 cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) since it was notified or the outbreak in March, 2014, with 11149 recorded deaths.
When this epidemic will be over, we cannot simply return to routine operation - something has to change profoundly in terms of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of Ebola virus disease. We think it will be most appropriate to discuss the lessons learnt from the present outbreak and the challenges ahead at a scientific meeting on the African continent, and invite you to attend the conference "Ebola and Other Filoviruses", which we are going to organize from September 06 to 10, 2015, at Praia do Tofo, Inhambane, Mozambique.
The conference is organized by Professor Rolf Hilgenfeld (University of Lübeck, Germany), in collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Saúde, the National Institute of Health of Mozambique.
The scientific program of this conference will be shaped by a Scientific Committee consisting of world-renowned filovirus researchers.
The following scientific sessions are planned for the conference:
- Past and Current Ebola and Marburg Outbreaks
- Molecular Biology of the Ebola Virus and of Other Filoviruses
- Ebola Diagnostics (incl. Mobile Labs)
- Vaccine Development
- Outcome of First Clinical Trials
- Development of Antivirals
- Public Health Issues (incl. Outbreak Responses)
- Treatment of patients (clinical session)
The number of participants will be limited to a maximum of 70, in order to enable most efficient discussions in a familiar atmosphere. The 70 slots available at this meeting will be allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. Being part of the new series "Tofo Advanced Study Week", the conference will take place at Hotel Tofo Mar, Praia do Tofo. This is a newly renovated boutique hotel situated directly on the beautiful Indian Ocean beaches of Tofo. Tofo is a divers' paradise (with one of the largest populations of whale sharks and manta rays on Earth and offers a relaxed atmosphere, enabling you to combine excellent science with a well-deserved holiday. Tofo is only 22 km from the airport of Inhambane, which has a daily flight from Johannesburg (South Africa), so it is easy to get there.
Conference participants will either stay in Hotel Tofo Mar or in one of the many guesthouses and lodges on or near Tofo beach. All classes of accommodation, from dormitory to luxury, will be available.
Our local travel agency, Terra Agua Ceu, will offer pre- and postconference tours to the Kruger National Park in South Africa. One of their tours to the Kruger starts in Maputo (Mozambique) and ends at Johannesburg International Airport, from which you could catch your flight home. The travel agency can also assist you in booking accommodation and flights.
Looking forward to seeing you at "Ebola and Other Filoviruses" at Tofo Beach in September, 2015,
with best regards,
